The Sinergia project " Boron Nitride Nanomesh for Guided Self-Assembly of Molecular Arrays in Solutions
" is funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation. It consists in a consortium of one Belgian and
three Swiss research groups.
The nanostructured material based on a single layer of hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) on a Rh(111) surface
shall be further investigated. This single-layer template is also stable in various liquids and can be imaged
by scanning tunneling microscopy in an electrolyte solution. The step into the liquid was not preconceived in
the previous project and opens entirely new opportunity windows for templated molecular self-assembly. Not
only do simple and cheap dip-coating or electrochemical processes become available for the large-scale
production of well defined molecular layers, but the range of molecular species that can be organized on top
of this template is no longer restricted by the stringent requirement of vacuum sublimation.
